Root canal has always faced biased opinions as many dentists consider root canal a safe procedure to treat deep dental cavities, while other research has shown that root canals may allow dangerous bacteria to grow in the mouth and the rest of the body. So here are some facts from experts at 7 Dental!
Root canals are operated for dental cavities that have progressed into the root of the teeth. The treatment of such cavities is mandatory because all the infected pulp inside the teeth needs to be removed and cleaned, before filling dental materials into the tooth.
The American Association of Endodontists believes no evidence that can relate any disease with the root canal technique but there are some scientific evidences that show the opposite.
The bacteria present in root canals can stimulate inflammatory molecules such as Interleukin-1beta and TNF-alpha, which can raise inflammation throughout the body causing malaise, cellulitis, fever in neck and head area or unrelated health problems which at worse can require hospitalization.
Dr. Price is known for his work on the relationship between nutrition and dental health, showed that root canals can cause chronic diseases of inflammation by experimentation on rabbit.
He conducted various experiments on rabbits, using infected teeth extracted from humans. His research found that rabbits would develop the condition that the person had i.e. when using a tooth from a person with heart attack, the rabbit implanted with the root canal tooth would develop heart attack within few weeks.
The bacteria that are found inside of root canals include groups of bacteria called Fusobacterium, Parvimonas, Prevotella, Porphyromonas, etc are present naturally in the mouth but they only become a problem when we are infected with them. The anaerobic conditions inside the root canal can cause them to grow exponentially and they become more dangerous. They can cause severe diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, etc. Thus the literature has shown that the infections of these bacteria in the mouth are linked to chronic inflammatory diseases.
